A penny for yourself, there’s no way of making change. Sarah lurched towards the bathroom and heard those lyrics on her headset. Leaving the potty slightly relieved, sparks and lights lit up the wall behind where she left her phone.

My writing instructor at Birkbeck in '06: "Don't use 'was' in descriptions. Avoid the passive voice. You'll be marked down." James Joyce: "Her head was leaned against the window curtains and in her nostrils was the odour of dusty cretonne. She was tired." ("you'll be marked down" is passive, btw)
