Since the rest of it is high-key racist, my money is on it being an abbreviation of “subcontinent”, a term sometimes used to describe India.

I just keep asking myself: If it’s real, why is there no arms race? People act like The Algorithm is etched in stone, instead of something infinitely malleable. If all the various conjugations of “kill” can be punished, why can’t it similarly punish “unalive” years after the term was coined?

It feels like a music nerd’s thinly-veiled excuse to hobnob with their heroes. When it can even be bothered to let the living legends take center stage, it’s delightful. The rest is… fine.

I can appreciate it’s largely composed of homages to Old Hollywood, but it’s all too slapdash: part screwball comedy, part film noir, part shaggy-dog tale, etc. It does none of them well, and pieces them together in such a way that they often clash with each other. Of course film bros love it.

Too many leftists think they can achieve their utopian vision by doing no actual work, but instead simply waiting patiently for all The Bad People™ to die of old age, at which point the Innately Left Youth will put in the necessary effort to fix everything.

As someone already old when it came out, I just assumed it was intentional, another form of commentary on Hollywood. All the characters’ wisdom comes from TV or movies, from consuming their own product. It’s an ouroboros trying to understand the outside world by focusing its attention ever inward.

> the two big ballers It’s often overlooked because of the sci-fi trappings, but The Matrix came out the same year as Fight Club and Office Space; and it, too, can be fairly described as “the story of a corporate cog trapped in a cubicle, desperate for something — anything — to shake things up.”

Starting the graph *after* the Great Recession is incredibly sus. Wouldn’t want to include any economic downturns in the analysis. “Well, there’s 2020—” which is when things became uncoupled. Show me a version of this going back to 1980 with no prior deviations and I’ll agree this is inexplicable.

Love & Thunder being cringe (or whatever) didn’t help things, but the backlash felt minor until he (or his social media manager) liked an Instagram post on Johnny Depp’s account that celebrated his court victory over Amber Heard. It was construed as Taika taking sides (specifically, the wrong side).

The moment that radicalized me was the reaction to Trump saying he loved the uneducated: liberals just openly guffawing at the idea of their “lessers” having a say in anything. (Hillary more-or-less joining in, rather than turning it into a talking point about education, was when I knew she’d lost.)

Honestly, that’s the smart move. Shorting is expensive af if you do it too far in advance of the bubble bursting. There’s even an old saying about it: “The market can stay irrational longer than you can stay solvent.”

Wow, that takes me back. “All major rivers flow toward the equator” was something I was *repeatedly* told in elementary school. I guess maybe they still teach that? But also: one of the first ancient civilizations we learned about was Egypt, and the Nile is a very obvious exception to that “rule”.

Wasn’t “Charlie X” about a normal human kid who learned psychic powers from aliens, or whatever? I swear, half of those scripts would’ve wound up on The Twilight Zone if that show hadn’t already been canceled.

It is endlessly fascinating to me that a deliberate choice was made to give psychic powers to the cold, rational scientist. In a modern show that would be social commentary about a kind of tunnel vision induced by the fear of embracing your emotions, but nope! It was done completely without irony.

I think Napster was the turning point. Illicit file-sharing wasn’t new, but this was different. People wanted internet access *just* to use Napster. That’s when Corporate America stopped looking at the internet as a weird place full of potential, and started looking at it as a Problem to Be Solved.
