When my kid was around 10 he loved the Teen Titans Go, and they had a group of villains called "80s jerks." That's who I think of here.

Same. I also never felt the short term benefits I was supposed to experience quitting smoking, either. I wasn't suddenly able to taste everything better, my wind didn't improve, etc. I don't regret quitting, and I know the long term benefits are there, it just wasn't instantly life changing.

Right in the fucking article, "I don’t know what’s happened to The New York Times that they make up news. It isn’t true.”

They're absolutely going to fumble a winnable election, and we'll all pay the price. They're such a bunch of fuckups.

Oh my God, that's almost exactly what I said to my wife when she suggested I get on Twitter. I wish I'd listened to my first instinct.

We had a dry run of this very thing with Dianne Feinstein. Could it be that Biden's advisors don't want to lose their positions/power, so they're encouraging him to stay in?

That's what I would have thought, too. It didn't make sense to me that he was learning Spanish to move to Canada, but that's what they told my wife.

I have friends who moved to Canada after Bush won re-election, and it was hard! They're both successful professionals. One of them learned Spanish, as having second language skills was a point in their favor.

I've been running the Auden line "we must love one another or die" through my head for months. In the broad sense, agape, loving the planet, etc. It has been clear to me for some time we will not love one another.

My dad was a greatest generation guy, big band jazz all the way, mostly hated rock and roll, but he really liked that song.

I have some friends who moved to Canada when George W. Bush was re-elected. Husband is a journalist, wife is an attorney. He learned Spanish because speaking a second language gives you a leg up. They had to really work at meeting the requirements.

This reminds me, I've seen exactly one monarch this summer. When I was a kid they were so common as to be boring. I much preferred the rarer (where I was anyway) tiger swallowtail. Come to think of it, I can't remember the last time I saw one of those.

Haha, same! As you noted, though, they know where they're going. She was taking a hazardous path, but she had a destination in mind. Ours is a quiet suburban street, and she probably would have been fine. And been able to lay her eggs where she wanted.

A couple years ago, I saw a painted turtle walking up the street near my house. It seemed like a perilous path she was walking, so I scooped her up to take her back to the pond near my house, and she peed all over me. I think she was on her way to lay eggs, and I interrupted her.

We accidentally hit one on a highway once, and it bounced high into the air. It was horrific, and my wife was traumatized by it. She still talks about it 20 years later.

Special treat: Fitzgerald's character's estranged husband is played by Alan Napier, best known (to me, at least) as Alfred in the original 60s Batman series.

Oh my God! Does that also have the Tennessee Williams Cinderella "Sin Doll-Ella?" I loved Mad as a kid, and my brother had a little pulp paperback "Like, Mad" with Alfred E. as a beatnik with goatee and beret. I didn't understand 90% of the jokes, but that didn't stop me from reading and rereading.
