Reminds me of my friend's alternative take on Mario. Bowser is really just Peach's friend and hes letting her lay low from Mario and eventually has to fight him to keep him away from Peach, but when he loses to Mario Peach has to pretend to be rescued because Mario is a dangerous psychopath.

I mean it could also be a kink of hers. Why else would Mario keep on inviting his "enemy" to his parties and kart races? XD
