So to me, the SNL piece was kind of a hit job on the Nation’s work, as you’d obviously have to be cra-cra, or a Nation reader, to be worried about this stuff.

I remember seeing this in 1998 and thinking SNL ripped off The Nation, which had a big issue on media consolidation in 1996 that used octopi. Exactly like the video. Here’s a snippet from that June 3, 1996 issue. It looks very similar.

More likely because they were bought out by private equity, which leveraged the company to buy it. That dropped it into a ton of debt. Then the new owners started liquidating assets and cutting corners in order to pay the investors money at the cost of the company itself. But they’ll blame shrimp.

Continuing the tradition, Columbia’s export to Dartmouth, Sian Beilock, had two students arrested last winter who were protesting quietly. The College claimed that they were blocking the grounds crew from mowing the lawn of the admin building. At 2am. In October. www.vnews.com/Editorial-Wh...

For renal failure? Check out the very positive side effects on kidney health when diabetics are given certain SGLT2 inhibitors. It’s a commentary at Nature 615 S2-S4 (2023) titled “ SGLT-2 inhibitors breathe life into kidney disease care”

Based on their patents, it’s likely a peptide and not (as they say) an amino acid. Then, as you pointed out, getting past the stomach is an issue. My guess is that it’s ~20 amino acids encoding the AIM hinge region from cats. That way it could compete with AIM for IgM. Or that’s what I’d do!

On a related note, SGLT2 inhibitors are doing amazing things for humans in kidney failure. Check out the commentary in Nature 615 S2-S4 (2023). the SGLT2 inhibitor bexacat was approved for diabetic cats recently. It’s my hope that vets keep evaluate renal function in cats on these drugs.

I agree it’s worth a shot - I use aminavast on my ckd cat based on the patent data. But it’s $400 a year. I worry that as ~50% of cats will have to reckon with ckd due to their AIM mutation, the large amount of money being spent here makes it an attractive opportunity for unethical individuals.

I mean to say it is easy for the public to mix the published results of the mouse studies, which implicate three role of feline AIM in renal failure, with AIM30, which doesn’t have any published results. My hope is that that wasn’t intentional.

There’s a great science paper (pmid 37551788) that came out this year describing what 2 molecules turn on cats’ taste buds. So those two compounds, IMP and histidine, are the highest in meats like tuna & bonito flakes. Spiking these in amy make all that crappy renal food taste way better for cats.

I wonder how similar this is to products in the US that make kidney protecting claims like Aminavast. Unfortunately no customer-facing information is available on the bottles or patents to help make that comparison.

this research team investigates the how the feline version of the AIM protein is defective in its job, which is to help clear out necrotic tissue in the kidneys. At the same time, they sell AIM30, which is a proprietary blend of amino acids and peptides. The name similarity is very unfortunate.

It’s probably too nerdy a reply but a really cool science paper (pmid 37551788) came out this year describing what two molecules in particular turn on cats’ taste buds. So those two compounds, IMP and histidine, are the highest in meats like tuna. So the authors suggest to spike in bonito flakes.
