Screenshots for those without access to Westlaw, and because no private company should hold a monopoly on access to the law (even the funny stuff)...

I'm updating my law library guides ahead of the new academic term in September, and I always love including my favourite Easter egg in the section about case law and law reports - MacDonald v. Cardle... 📚

I know Apple Health has a medication feature, so I can always use that - was just wondering if there was anything else out there with more bells and whistles!

I’ve got surgery coming up in a month’s time and I have a whole host of pre- and post-surgery meds and supplements to take - does anyone have any recommendations for good apps or tools to help me keep track of them all, with all the different amounts/timings etc?

Yeah, I think a lot of law firms lack digital access to legal material - Westlaw/Lexis subscriptions are so expensive, and it generally tends to be only your large, multi-office firms that have their own law libraries and the budgets.

We used to see lots of local lawyers in our law library accessing law reports and journals, but with these increasingly digital-only and under restricted licence to registered users, these sources aren't accessible either. So where/how do lawyers access sources of information?

I often think about this in relation to the law students I support. Access to the law is vital for them as practising lawyers, and yet few small law firms can afford Westlaw or Lexis subscriptions to access case law/legislation, and government sources lag far behind.

It'd be my dream to get the opportunity to teach classes and talk to students more about these issues of information privilege and knowledge equity!

I think too often our practice as librarians is limited to what students need in the short term as students, rather than focussing on equipping them with the skills and knowledge they’ll need after university.

Libraries have worked hard to make access to our resources as seamless and easy as possible, but in doing so we've also made it harder for our users once they graduate, right at the point when they're in most need of research to inform their practice.

One of the things I've found with my #ebookSOS work is that most people within academia, lecturers and students alike, have no idea how the knowledge economy works, no idea how limited general access to scholarly material is (or how expensive!) or the many barriers in place.

Interesting article on something we should be talking more about with students - the importance of research-informed practice and the barriers to accessing that research, the limitations of open access and the issues of information privilege... 📚

I made this Pride flag using only NASA images and our team thought it would be cool to share on social (I work on the NASA heliophysics communications team), but it's getting all sorts of hate on the bird app and Fbook. Thought y'all might be more appreciative of it here. ☺️🏳️‍🌈💖

I definitely think my ADHD has its strengths at work - my ability to multi-task, pivot quickly from one thing to another, my eagerness to take on new projects, but I'm not sure I'd say those outweigh the toll it takes on me mentally, or the fact that I can't control those skills at will. 📚

Is there a single social media platform anywhere that doesn't constantly pack your feed with 'suggestions' and 'promoted content'? Even Reddit and LinkedIn do it now! So annoying.

Seems to me that ridding HE of the assumption that in selecting texts on the basis of identity you are by default throwing out your standards of value and accuracy and insight is precisely the mindset the whole ‘decolonisation’ movement is trying to dismantle.

I see no reason why underrepresented authors should be seen as less factual or insightful, simply because they are not white or male or heterosexual or cis or Western. It is entirely possible to select on the basis of identity AND academic rigour. 📚

Ever find it frustrating that you don't have the time or mental bandwidth to do all the things you want to do? I have three ideas for journal articles - two I'm already working on and one that just occurred to me this morning, and I can't do them all at once! 📚

It sounds crazy but we need to go back to the days of teaching the very basics of IT again. We already know the concept of the 'digital native' is nonsensical, but we're increasingly seeing that being digital literate in some areas is eroding digital literacy in others.

And so students who have only ever known these kinds of devices are often stumped by things that seem incredibly basic to us, things we assume everyone vaguely tech-literate knows - how to save files, how to use a mouse, how to organise folders.

Now, with smart devices, with their intuitive design and closed operating systems, you're not meant to know how they work, just to use them. You need specialists to troubleshoot and fix, there's no way to look under the hood.

Been saying this for years. My generation is like the first generation of car drivers - you had to know how to drive AND fix the car. We knew how the systems worked, how to troubleshoot and fix and navigate computers.
