“They gave their alliance a nickname: Women and Ambition — cheeky because, as they saw it, “ambitious” remained such a loaded adjective for young women. Their convergence at the Public in the mid-2010s would resonate as far more than happy memories.”

As it’s Sir Richard Starkey’s birthday – oh, OK, Ringo Starr – it seems an apt moment to mention that while I’ve seen and enjoyed “A Hard Day’s Night” many times since its remastering and rerelease in the early 80s, I’ve never seen “Help!” I feel this is a lapse on my part.

“This very 21st-century approach is inspired by 18th-century economist Adam Smith’s theory that value is driven by supply & demand. Instead of relying on fixed prices, companies maximise profits by ramping up prices when products are in short supply.”

I only know him from his TV work in the 70s and 80s, when his features had hardener into an exemplar of cruelty, somewhat akin to Henry Silva.

I shake investigate, but a traveling theatre troupe suggests it belongs on the updated list, despite my lack of G&S enthusiasm overall. This isn't meant to be a critical list, but a resource.

There was a corollary post, with movies about theatre, which came first, and definitely needs expansion, so I welcome your suggestions there too. Thanks!

I compiled this roster of plays and musicals about theatre itself more than dozen years ago. Time for an update. So as I did with the original, I’m asking my social media braintrust for help. What’s newer? What’s missing?

That's a deep cut. I know neither of the play or the production. In 1977, I didn't even know about BAM.

Given the “1776” enthusiasm, maybe next year I’ll recount the sad tale of little Howard S, age 7, and how he was rebuffed in his efforts to see the original production of the musical, at a time when he had only been to the theatre perhaps twice, but knew he wanted to see it.

Variations of this are a Jeopardy perennial, though the props/props wordplay is new. If only they'd feature a certain book ABOUT the play, by yours truly...

Though Morning's at Seven beats it for fewer performances (44 vs 91) and it's hardly beloved, Sophie Treadwell's Machinal may prove to have an even longer afterlife.
