He runs hot and cold for me, but also yes yes yes, thank you for promoting “The Red Tower,” I still think about that one.

Nice! I love when the sharks turn med-evac’d one-armed Stellan Skarsgard into an underwater battering ram ❤️

I just watched The Deep Blue Sea and this Renny Harlin hot mess is just what I needed. I mean it has LL Cool J stabbing a shark with his crucifix. stellar recommendation

fwiw I support Ebert’s take (my biggest issue is that they should’ve given Bruce Campbell the Dylan Walsh role instead of a cameo; he would’ve known how better to play to the movie’s trashiness.)

Right? “Tormented” is not a bad flick! Bert I. Gordon chasing Val Lewton and, apart from some embarrassing vfx choices, creating an effective fatalistic vibe. (I still like the riffs, esp Tom’s “Oh right, like there’s never been a sex scandal in jazz.”)

Might be worth trying one of them again someday on a weekend afternoon. I find them energetic and silly/witty in about the right ratio— but also I never watched them at the time of release, maybe they hit different when you’ve paid for full ticket price and a bucket of popcorn.

I don’t know of a novel where rats play a central role, but rats are a consort of Flagg in “The Stand” and Throckett / Straker in “Salem’s Lot” (and ate a main character in a death excised from the og text).

A fascinating film in how it explores the complete inability of snarker Whedon and baroque weirdo Jeunet to meet in the middle. (Irony: its ultimate villain is a hybrid being that must be put down.)

The mid to late ‘90s were a haven for just smart enough pulp, they’re mostly on AppleTV: Anaconda The Mummy Congo Deep Blue Sea The Relic (I would exclude “Lake Placid” and “Bats,” they have their moments but not enough of em.)

Or when he and his son agree to a scheme that involves convincing Lorraine she is being sexually assaulted, which is, ya know, sexual assault. (In the movie’s defense, George objects, and Marty realizes he can’t go through with it, which counts for something in the era of “Revenge of the Nerds.”)

Oh, 100% on #1, that’s also one of the most common core ideas of authoritarianism. There was a borderline elysian golden age, and we need to return to it. (Which brings up the eternal response of: who exactly was it a golden age for?)

- James Cameron walks into room. - writes GLADIATOR on marker board - smirks - SWAT team bangs down my door - they rush into my house - I shoot the first one that breaches my bedroom - the men scream DON’T DO THE JOKE, JIM - I try to put the gun to my temple as they wrestle me to the ground

The irony of this is, I don’t know if I’ve experienced kinder media fans than horror fans. No fandom is perfect, but their toxicity seems meaningfully lower than, say, those of certain space opera and comic book-based franchises.

As someone who enjoys the "Final Destination" series on balance, feels like nobody yet has fully dug into the implications of the core premise: death is coming for you, you ultimately can't stop it, how do you make your peace with that? Or would going in that direction feel like Diet "It Follows"?

Writing a fanfic for the first time, it’s kinda fun, no stress of any kind, just vibing. (It’s a horror story with cosmic horror elements set in the “Star Wars” universe. 👀)

I’m a thief but focused early on STR with ax and heavy armor. Move like a tank, need to work on endurance. Good call on DEX. That’s cool that you’re diving back in! 👍🏻 I’m sure it improves on a second play.

Huh. I’m a horror kinda guy and land in the middle. Hardly tame, with the blood eagle in particular, but at times it plays more like a darker-than-black comedy; maybe its streak of fatalism lands harder with folks that are more exposed to entertaining horror.

This might be a distinction without a difference, but I think for many of them it’s less that they’re *incapable of* and more that they’re *disinterested in* intellectual engagement. Fascists and fascist-likes view intellectualism with contempt and perceive intellectuals as weak-willed effeminates.

Best episode of TV I ever watched? I don’t know why, but lately I keep thinking about the “Twilight Zone” ep “I Am the Night - Color Me Black.” Its blunt assessment of how hatred grows and kills the light of this world just sits with ya. Humanity’s never had to be as cruel as it’s chosen to be.

The best way to make a new “Ghostbusters” is to simply not make a new one and instead move on, we can all move on, it’s genuinely okay to stop making these things, there’s no malice in recognizing that this thing was a one-and-done like “Men in Black.”

Just wrapped, focusing on a tragic antagonist gives “Disappearance at Devil’s Rock” its own identity for a while, but I’m genuinely shocked by how much seems to come straight from “Lake Mungo.” 1. Cabin at the End of the World 2. Head Full of Ghosts 3. Survivor Song 4. Disappearance at Devil’s Rock

That one sucks because 99% of the time it’s effect = noun and affect = verb, but also “effecting change” is a thing.

I mean, I’d definitely challenge “Winter Soldier,” I thought “First Avenger” was better; better style, better approach with its throwback sincerity, a less annoying climax than “deploy the helicarriers.” (I also think “A New Hope” is a peer to “Empire,” not inferior.) Agreed on “Gremlins 2” tho.

Just rewatched the og “Mad Max,” hadn’t seen it in years, it’s amazing what Miller and Co. were able to achieve on their debut, and equally amazing that so much “Mad Max” DNA is already in the flick: gun-toting granny, crow sounds, low angles, Nightrider all but shouting “Witness me!” to Toecutter.

Okay, kept thinking “Disappearance” felt familiar, and then last night I realized now that it seems the book is just “Lake Mungo,” often shamelessly so. (Tremblay’s admitted the flick was an inspiration, but wow.) A real surprise given the effectiveness of “Cabin” and “Head.”

Ironically they were happy to use CGI and AI to paste elements of ATJ’s face on the young actress to smooth the transition from child to young adult. (Maybe the only thing in the flick that bugs me.)

There’s something so cool too about that bit where Ford helps the wounded kid. You could argue it doesn’t move the plot forward, it doesn’t give TLJ a clue, we already know Ford is a kind man— but it still works! (Arguably it helps melt TLJ’s icy heart a bit, but also the scene is about itself.)

Rewatching “The Fugitive” with the GF, and I’m in awe. If anything I underestimated this flick, and I already thought it was fantastic. Amazing on a script level, an editing level, fantastic camerawork. It’s also awesome how the flick doesn’t give Kimble a Character Flaw, it just gives him a goal!
