Not viable I don't think If he's not fit to serve (which is the premise of his stepping down as the candidate) then he's also not fit to be the understudy Also you can't just make him be vice president now, that would have to go through the 25A just like anything else

He’ll be taking step back as part of what has always been a team after election, going back to VP, because he’s slowing down a bit now and trusts her. In case of succession needs, it’ll be fine, he can sort then out if it comes up. We trust him enough for that.
