I think giving the snake confederate battle stripes would communicate your intent without changing the art.

Did you know that in Hinduism the right facing swastika is a symbol of good luck, while the left facing is a symbol of the tantric aspects of Kali? Doesn't change the fact it's been co-opted by Nazis, and thus tainted for people who use it "properly." Gadsten is the same way now.
