It's hard to put into words how it feels when you begin to recognize yourself as an artist. I'm finally starting to cross that bridge. Still processing it.

I agree that libraries are amazing. They're some of my favorite places. Most of the sites don't even make a meaningful profit. Many run off donations or ads, using that to pay for server space. Zack wouldn't be bothered by that anyways, as he insists the money component of this is secondary.

I agree, but this seems to betray the point: somebody still has to pay for it. I'm sure the librarian will be happy to order the book and make it regardless of whether you consent. Meanwhile, you get paid, as you should. But in libraries, you don't give consent, get paid, and have no issue? Get it?

Except the majority of scanalators make no money from their work. Broadly, there is no "profit." These aren't businesses. They are primarily fan projects wherein people use their time to deliver the manga in a faster time and on a better platform than publishers are willing to.

Does this mean I need to have the library contact you too for your consent to share it with me?

After several separate searches, I can find only one copy in a library within 100 miles of my city, and it's a university library I don't have access to as a non-student. Is there another means by which you would consent to my consuming this book without payment?

Zack, you're an artist yourself, right? A writer? Let's get a more specific then. Would you consent to me consuming, say, "Kaibyo: the Supernatural Cats of Japan" without paying for it? I'll give you my word I won't pirate it by any means if you say no.

Wow, what a disingenuous way to talk past me. I don't ask them because... I don't have access to them like you do? You keep insisting that I don't care about the artists, but your logic is circular. Nothing about scanalations prevents artists from creating. Maybe try answering a question.

What do the artists have against those outside major metropolitan areas in other countries that they will not consent to those people consuming their work?

Alright, let's remove money from it then. Why don't these artists consent to poor people in other countries consuming their work?

Except money is inextricably tied to peoples ability to consume the art in the way the artist consents.

The problem is, your side of the conversation comes off as disingenuous, as you're saying simultaneously that: 1. The money doesn't matter to the artist. 2. If you don't pay money to read the work it upsets the artist. Do you not see how this is contradictory?

The problem is the reason people read scans are entirely to do with money. Their position (as you have portrayed it) ultimately boils down to "poor people and those outside of major cities shouldn't ever read manga, and it's not my publishers fault," the last part of which is patently false.

That's a fair request; I'll admit that most studies don't specifically look at translated material. I would posit that, if examined, accessibility issues are far more damaging for manga in specific than piracy is. If I do find specific material to back up (or refute) this, I'll be sure to update.

So this isn't about making the artists better off, this is purely about feelings. It's not about how the industry as a whole is built on an abusive, exploitative model built to suck every last penny out of brilliant creative minds and work them to the bone. It's about gatekeeping.

I'm sure they'll feel better when they get the check from the books I bought because I read the scans. I'd have no access to their work unless my local Barnes & Noble happens to stock it AND I happen to open it up and decide I like it, which is difficult since they don't sort by genre.

Additionally, plenty of studies have shown that piracy (broadly) leads to a direct increase in paid sales long-term, which generates more money for the artists. This is a issue far more complex than "YoU'rE sTeAlInG", and if you had it your way the artists would be even worse off.

That's not facts at all. You're projecting a broad strawman onto a large group. Are you right for some? Sure, but many people use scans to get access to manga they simply can't, or that may not be available for months. Better people read scans than not at all, because that is often the alternative.

Even for manga that aren't available in the states (The Shiori Experience), I would have no reason to support the author without scanalations. The fact that I don't have a way to monetarily do so isn't a moral failing on my part.

Let's not pretend anybody who reads manga hates the artists. The issue is publishers aren't interested in providing a quality product outside Japan. I pay for a JUMP subscription, but I read their content through third party apps. Why? Frankly, the pirate sites and apps have better features.

I don't think it's terribly hidden. That's a topic covered in the first couple weeks of most basic anthropology classes, where it's outed as an old backwards and racist concept that no longer holds water.

Still funny to me that the last six (6!) Republican presidents never named Texas as the State of the Union. The last one to do so was Eisenhower. However, it's suspected that award was only because a staffer swapped out the papers last minute and dear old Dwight couldn't remember who he chose.
