ANYWAY:
Make black and white comics.
Make scarily personal comics.
Make weird comics that shock and enthrall and horrify and even disgust, don't be "safe," don't be "easy," make exactly what you want.
Thank you, that is all.
Literally this. Even if people try to be safe to cater to the bullies somebody somewhere will find something to complain about. There's no point in making something that you don't want to. If everything was safe it would be boring.
Hmmm, could give black&white a try! As the colored comic does terrify a bit from the amount of work required for them. Thank you for these great reminders! <3
It’s funny, this has been my mindset this week, having just returned from heroescon.
It was fun, but it strengthened my resolve to pour my focus into the making of comics, & not worry about the selling aspect.
I have a site where I can post stuff. I don’t need to pitch, so it’s time to get weird!
I’ve been so nervous to make my comic ideas bc I don’t think they’ll be very palatable (my stories often involve serious trauma, like trafficking, bc that’s my experience). I want to make them…but getting over that hurdle is so tough!
Realizing that I could make B&W comics a few years ago was kind of a revelation. It's freeing to divorce yourself from the preconceived notions of what "readers want".
I spent WAY too long hearing that "people won't read a B&W webcomic/buy a B&W book". And some won't! But it's not universal.
