In 1933 he returned to the MLB and hit .301 with 87 RBIs... And was 3rd in the league in strikeouts. In 1934, he led the league in doubles and extra base hits while hitting .339. He also caused a stir, when late in the season he announced he would sit out two games in September.

The two games fell on the Jewish holidays Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. After discussing the situation with his rabbi, he decided he would play on Rosh Hashanah - he homered twice and the tigers beat the Red Sox 2-1. He did not play on Yom Kippur.
