In October 1940 Hank Greenberg registered for the draft. The first in the American League to do so. He was initially given 4F due to "flat feet," but demanded to be reexamined and was cleared for regular activity. He played 19 games prior to reporting to Ft. Custer

On December 5, 1941 Greenberg was honorably discharged due to his age (he was over 28). He re-enlisted February 1st. He was the first major league player to join the Air Force and spent 6 months in Asia in 1944. In total he served 47 months, the most of any player.
