From what I have heard, it’s yes and no. A lot of average people, especially racial minority people, people from US Caribbean and Pacific territories, people of all ethnicities trying to get away from rough upbringing. Then you have the people who signed up because ‘murica.

It’s been a good while since either were in, but used to know a minister who had been longtime national guard, who enlisted because abusive childhood, and a now trans woman in air force in early 90’s that left poverty and backwardness in SE Ohio Appalachian counties.
