I do wonder if, far in the future, some aspects of our current pop culture will form the same sort of shared genre that games could pull from. Will Klingons, Cylons, Jedi, and the Tardis become the elves and dwarves of sci-fi? Hard to say... but it's fun to think about.

That's not to say that this is universally true, far from it, but I do think it speaks to the value of a shared, public domain gathered around a core genre. It's also why it is so frustrating to see major corporations fight so hard to keep things out of the public domain.

This also explains why licensed sci-fi, horror, and super hero games tend to do so well within their genre. Their shared narrative is already defined by the brand, making it far easier for folks to understand what the game is all about just by looking at the cover.

Sci-fi, horror, and super hero games have a smaller shared zeitgeist. Each game has to define itself, making it a bigger lift for the players and a harder thing to convey to prospective gamers. When you say Elf, everyone knows what you mean, but a Phentari needs explanation.

It serves as a fast and simple way for everyone to be roughly imagining the same thing, which is key to the experience. Although your individual vision of events can vary, everyone needs to be speaking the same "language" in terms of elements that make the game unique.

One of the reasons why I think fantasy is a dominant genre in ttrpgs is just how much of the core of it is public domain, gathered from centuries of myth and folklore. It allows each game to borrow from those core concepts and define itself by the ways in which it is different.

Look between the H and the N on your keyboard. See how there are no other letters there? Just like my last name, the H comes right before the N. Not next to the L, not before the B. Just right there toward the end, before the N. Glad we could clear that up.

So, try a lot of games. Indie games, established games, new games, old games, games that come in 600 page tomes and games that come on a single piece of paper. Discover the games that work for YOU. That is all that matters.

The point I am trying to make here is that there seems to be some lines drawn that equate the quality of a show to whether or not you will like the game and a lot of folks seem to run into walls with this approach when reality not meeting their expectations.

I am also a big fan of some games that are, quite frankly, a bit of a mess when it comes to their design and would be a nightmare to try and stream. I have a nostalgic link to some and with others I genuinely just like the world building.

This goes without saying, but I enjoy games with a bit of crunch to the rules. These games don't typically stream well. Other times I am in the mood for a game with a more freeform narrative focus. The latter certainly makes for better passive entertainment.

Whether or not a game streams well in an Actual Play or makes for a good podcast does not necessarily mean that you will enjoy it at the table yourself. While there are some similarities, listening to a game as entertainment is quite a bit different than playing it yourself.
