When the City of #Albany was looking for ways to better connect its downtown to the Hudson River waterfront, they landed on this creative solution. They converted an under-utilized access ramp on Interstate 787 into the “Albany Skyway” pedestrian and #cycling link.

Building new housing where an expressway used to be. This is the Inner Loop in #Rochester. A former 4-6 lane highway that became one of the 1st expressway removals in N. America. Just a couple years after it was removed, over 500 units of midrise #housing now sit where the expressway used to be.

Someone once suggested to me that the walkability of a neighbourhood could be determined based on the number of staples in the hydro poles. I always liked that idea.

Little improvements like this make such a big difference. I think this is my favourite new little link in the Hamilton cycling network. Nothing fancy. Just a short extension to the well-used Cootes Drive multi-use path to get you into downtown Dundas.

Most pedestrian streets that I’ve seen just close off the street to vehicles and they’re done. Nothing wrong with that. But Boulevard Anspach in #Brussels has gone a step further and added trees, wildflower gardens, planters and rain gardens. Looks great!
