i mean, the honest truth is that many black parents raise their children to anticipate racial prejudice, in addition to the fact that many of us who grew up in predominantly white environments have experienced it directly from a young age.
Nancy French has talked a lot about how eye-opening it was raising their third child (adopted, black) and comparing it with raising their white children. A whole *lot* of subtle (or less subtle) “do you belong here” interactions.
it is part of why i always laugh at people who accuse me, or any black person, of being too sensitive. in my experience it actually takes something very explicit for it to be significant enough to comment or remark on.
