One problem in today's political discourse is that wonky folks celebrate the fact that inflation is falling. But to most people, inflation means high prices. Prices aren't coming down much. Thus, to them, it seems the pundits are out of touch, at best, or dishonest, at worst.

Currently, 8.8% of the energy used in the USA comes from renewable energy. It would be enlightening to redo this to show how much work is done by each energy source. You can do more work with one BTU from electricity than with a BTU from fossil fuels. #greensky cleantechnica.com/2024/07/03/h...

A dilemma in governance is that the best way to avoid tyranny is to have a power-sharing arrangement, but sometimes the folks you share power with will use that power to do things you don't like. Safeguards against the tyranny of the majority can be exploited to create tyranny of the minority.

My father was in basic training for the Army when the bombs were dropped. He believed the act saved him from going into combat, thus he supported their use. He and I disagreed on that until he died. I still believe I'm right, but I can't entirely dismiss his view on the matter.

Being in the USA, I often refer to the Preamble to the US Constitution, which makes patriotism part of the emotional framing. The last three words are "and our posterity," which reminds folks of the unimpeachable fact that our Founders meant for us to ensure freedom for coming generations.

David Hume wrote, "Reason is, and ought only to be the slave of the passions, and can never pretend to any other office than to serve and obey them." He's right. The human mind does not operate primarily through logic. Change will only happen with successful appeals to emotion. Logic will not work.
