I'm looking at it from another perspective as a journalist: at news companies using this as (yet one more) opportunity to try to extend copyright and diminish fair use. That goes back to at least radio. I write about that in section 5 of this paper:

“In short: the actions of the large corporations who are training AI models on in-copyright material are provoking a backlash against the idea of open dissemination on the internet and web.” I’m curious what impact this kind of scraping is having on approaches to online museum collections.

A (very) short talk I just delivered at the SHARP conference in Reading about a large language model embedded inside of a font and the implications of the post-GPT textuality. llama.tff here: github.com/fuglede/llam...

Germany, most certainly unlike America, is a book culture. Here is the lead story on @zeitonline right now: recommend summer reading. (And isn't this a nice, cultural break from newsroom?).

In this morning’s #SHARP2024 session on piracy, Michael Knies is describing methods C19 pirates used to copy fonts sold by other foundries, including methods using electrotype. What I’m wondering, of course, is whether we might use similar methods today to reproduce lost typefaces?

@dangillmor.bsky.social: "Please, journalists, declare independence from business as usual, from the counterproductive customs that have prevailed in our media even as the danger has escalated. Business as usual is outright malpractice. Stop, before it is too late."

The Times is baying for an 81-year-old to quit but admires an 83-year-old author who won't.

"Clashing views of the nature of politics." Damn, The New York Times has a never-ending pool of white-gloved euphemisms for authoritarianism, insurrection, and fascism.

I wake up to Politico on Morning Joe. Look how they, like The Times and The Post, are baying for Biden's head.

This story is terribly misleading. MSNBC hosts are not baying for Biden's head, like The Times and The Post. They are critical because they are responsible journalists. But that does not mean the network is calling for him to drop out.

The Post and The Times go out of their way to give space to more people to call for Biden's head. Do they ever give space to anyone to call for Trump to drop out? No. Do they give balanced opportunity to those who back Biden? No. The agenda is clear.

Odd timing, given that recent events expose the shit the founders didn't anticipate, and we're about to regress to George III on his worst days, of which he had many.

Have I told you this week how much I FUCKING HATE MICROSOFT TEAMS. Trying to watch a fascinating pane at the #sharp2024 conference and it keeps quitting on me. Why would anyone choose to use this junk software when we have better?

Peter Baker on Morning Joe : "Obviously, right now the Biden camp is telling us he's not going to bow out, period. Of course, they'll say that right up until the moment he does decide to bow out, if in fact that moment ever comes." Yeesh.

Editors pride themselves on the magical talent they call news judgment. Well, compare The Times after the debate, with apocalyptic panic over a hoarse President, with the mild coverage of the breaking of the Constitution by its highest authority.

Wu has been at war against the 1st Amendment since his 2017 “Is the First Amendment Obsolete?” As the net enables public discourse as never before and as fascism rises, we need its protection more than ever. The Times gives him frequent opportunity to express what in my mind is a dangerous opinion

By making the Supreme Court's crowning of King President seem like just another step in a long trend, The Times thus normalizes and diminishes the profound insurrection in the decision.

Support your independent journalists, folks. Listen. There's a cohort of us who were trained (in some fashion, not always formally) in the job of reporting as it existed just before the rise of online news. Many are retired or have left the field, but the quality indies are among this group.

This drips with anti-Biden agenda. The Post has become as bad as The Times. Each is broken. CNN is broken. Big, old media are broken. Our only hope, as @hcrichardson.bsky.social said on Facebook "will be a bottom-up media rather than the current corporate model."

Let's see how this works out. The total cost is about the same as my old NYT sub., and both seem to have the same non-profit business model.
