Fun, nuanced article on electric buses. But these stories about the energy transition in rural America should all come with the caveat that the Corn Belt is *already an energy landscape*. About 45% of Nebraska's corn crop is being turned into ethanol. [Gift link]

For those of us interested in using history to understand the energy transition and decarbonization, it's heartening to hear that Ford's executive team has been briefed on this history as part of their EV strategy.

My neighbor is going to a wedding today. It's the fourth marriage for the bride and groom, so they're calling it "fourth on the fourth." God bless America, land of the second (or 3rd or 4th) chance.

If you're a federal judge or clerk who needs a quick refresher on the competing ways of measuring lifecycle carbon intensity of indirect land-use change for different biofuels feedstocks, hit me up.

Midwest is curtailing an hourly average of 800 MW of electricity from wind. Gotta fix transmission, but in the meantime let's charge some big batteries or make green ammonia! 🔌💡

These technologies have mostly been framed as “climate.” But they’re so revolutionary (energy without burning fuel!!) we should think about embracing the “new Industrial Revolution” framing. It’s accurate and gets out of the climate politics partisanship, IMO.

Thanks for the info. I saw that story about pro-pipeline politicians losing in the SD primaries and figured it was a sign that the state was turning hard against any projects. But good point that the regulatory agency might rule differently.

Thanks for covering this (not a lot of biofuels/ag reporters are on Bluesky yet!) I haven't followed every twist and turn, but isn't requiring South Dakota's approval a big hurdle? My understanding was that CO2 pipelines are a no-go in South Dakota at this point.

Few things break my teaching heart like hearing that students paid for a pdf I assigned because they got tripped up by the off campus paywall and assumed they had to pay like $25 to read an article.

Great episode. Like @jasonheppler.org , I’ve recently made the switch to Obsidian for capturing and storing notes. We need a place where historians can share interesting use cases/plugins/etc. since it’s a big ecosystem.

I’ve always thought this is the flip side of Putnam’s thesis—small-group solidarity can easily turn into the lynch mob. In the US case, you see it in things like the 2nd Klan, which was basically an evil fraternal order.

NYRB making this 1986 review of a Ford biography free must be a Musk subtweet: “The one thing worse [than bureaucratic leadership] would be some corporate leader, in the manner of the two Henry Fords, seeking to impose an intrinsically incompetent personal authority”

It's a battle of the rest stops situation, since the women marching in 1933 (shown in the Illinois panel) were part of the Progressive Miners of America, the union formed directly in opposition to John L. Lewis.
