My wife would always get people telling her "Oh of course your parents love you" to refute her abuse and neglect. It was infuriating to me who knew her story. This assumption that all parents are loving and not only loving, but good parents, is deranged. Just take a look around at the awful parents!

I'm not sure all parents necessarily understand what "love" means. I'm sure my parents believed they "loved me unconditionally", but their actions often didn't align to that idea, and in hindsight I'm realising how much of my own conceptualisation of "love" was shaped by those experiences.
