Being the 'gifted child' sucked so much. Because you eventually stopped getting praise for doing well, but then you were left with the existential fear of underperforming even SLIGHTLY, which got you heaps of disappointment from everyone.

The first time I got 88% on a test I felt like I was dying. And got a round of disappointed looks and assurances that I'll just have to try harder to do better next time.
