Hot take: I'm truly not interested in hand wringing over how much people will miss enjoying the books of men who have turned out to be abusers. I'm far more concerned about the missing art that women haven't been able to create/publish because they crossed paths with such men.

My RN mother has mentioned, numerous times, how my teeth were retarded. They came in late. Medical terms don’t always age well or fit in mainstream language well.

Yay! I love this show so much! I’ve seen the first episode four times, once I watched, then I slowly convinced each family member and watched it with them. Totally worth it.

The difference in the ways I define busy in the summer vs during the school year is astounding.
Summer = there’s something on our calendar? I’m overwhelmed!
School year = a day without at least three things on the calendar? Fantastic! I’ll get so much done!

My own children (ages 20 and 17) who have me (who won an ISTE award for early elementary tech use) and my husband (a college history professor who leads international workshops on digital humanities) are DEEPLY anti-AI. It gives me much hope.

Today’s trip to the library began and ended with me complaining to my 17 year old about how oppressively hot it was. (Followed by the realization that I needed to hit another library, one I could walk to. For a brief second I thought, “We should walk.” Then my brain kicked in.)

I visited two local libraries near me today (I'm teaching a children's literature course this summer and needed some specific titles). Both were buzzing with activity and people of all ages. It brought me immense joy.

It is so fascinating. We have an almost-14-year-old chihuahua we rescued when he arrived in a shelter in Arlington after the explosions in Beirut in 2020 (he'd been in a shelter there). He either dislikes or is scared of just about everything. But the fireworks don't bother him and it is a gift.

I haven't. It's been on my list but I've been hesitant as it seems dystopian which isn't really my thing. I'll be curious to hear what you think.

It is easy to start doomscrolling and just keep at it. It's a challenge I fight every summer. This summer, I've managed to read quite a few books already and hope to keep working through my to read list (of mostly books for fun).

It hit me today what a metaphor for this time the movie The Birdcage is. Hypocritical republicans doing all they can to use liberals to cover their flaws while said liberals bend over backwards to accommodate the republicans. I’m not sure I can enjoy the movie any more.

You have earned all their gratitude, for sure! This is our front walk every morning this time of year. My teenagers and I try not to leave the house until after my husband as he's 6'2" and gets all the webs for us.

I feel so lucky to have the relationship with my family that I have. My husband’s relationship with his family is more complicated. It is hard for everyone.

It's been a few weeks because of summer and travel but I'm at my sister's in CA and I just brought my tap shoes down so that we can have some fun together (as she also takes tap class). It'll be interesting to compare our experiences!

Fascinating. I don’t know anyone who has gotten one. In fact, I don’t think I know anyone who has spoken positively of them.

This is definitely a time when social media can be really hard to handle. I think it really intensifies the various mixed emotions at moments like these. (I love that you have college girlfriends who are still so close!)

Oof, yes, that too.
My current school is on a military base so we have a very high mobility rate, adding to the significant changes many of our students face at the end of a school year.

Don't ask me how to do it yet. I need to get a bit more past the last day and finish packing up my classroom but a few kids are going to be haunting my sleep and I'll be mulling this over to come up with some ideas soon.

Today was our last day of school. I have so many thoughts flying around in my head. The one that keeps banging itself into my temple, making itself heard, is how hard this is for some students. Change is so hard for some kids and I am sure there are ways we could support them better.

Finally, I am awed again by the support and encouragement these students and their adults show each other. I am hoarse this morning from cheering last night and I was so much less than many. It was absolutely beautiful.

The Cappies were founded by two people. One was Bill Strauss who I loved for his work with the Capital Steps. The other was Judy Bowns who was my theater teacher in middle school and cast me in my first show. By chance, we later did our capstone masters degree class together. It felt full circle.

This was extra special for me because not only was I super proud of my kid and their peers for all their hard work, but I played harp in the pit for this show. And the pit won the award for the orchestra. (And so well deserved because the students and adults involved worked hard and were amazing.)

Last night I got to spend the evening at the Kennedy Center for the Cappies Gala (like the Tonys for high school theater). My 17 year old was nominated for both Stage Crew and Stage Management (no wins though). The show my kid worked so hard on did win 8 Cappies out of 15 nominations.

10 minutes and $20 this morning to get my 17 year old's drivers license (a Real ID) replaced. Our DMV experiences (in northern Virginia) in recent years have been absurdly good.

It is so awesome. When my 20 year old was in second grade she read an Elephant and Piggie book for the talent show. I was skeptical but it was fantastic.
