My most charitable explanation is it as a trauma response to, at some point, wholeheartedly hoping and believing in something that turned out to be stupid fucking bullshit. I think my layer of ironic distance in my 20s/30s was low-reward, but also relatively low-risk. It’s a coherent strategy.
