Now that formal genres have splintered into an infinite array subsubgenres, it is time for content-based genres to rise. Surf. Christmas. Car. Moon. Dog. Money.

I came to my 14 year old with a concern about social media. He literally took his glasses off, rubbed his temples, and asked: “what have the moms on the internet said now?” 😯🫤😆

I more or less agree, but: Obama’s first 2012 debate was “very bad”, but I’m genuinely unsure if there has been a worse presidential debate performance than Biden’s in the history of our country. I don’t think it reflects his average state, but the floor it reveals should shake people up.

I assigned this to some 20-year-olds a few semesters ago for a “Pitch for a fictional line of Annapurna Interactive game adaptations” project, and they had some ambivalence about the film—especially what to do with the pivotal self-drugging. But they all thought Lake absolutely fucking rocked.

The Cut has kind of branded itself a purveyor of a certain kind of provocative essay that you sort of can’t avoid reading but this one is very straightforward and just… really good: www.thecut.com/article/mary...

As an analogy, if Brian Eno said his next album of songs was going to have AI-generated instruments, I’d at least be cautiously optimistic; if Randy Newman did the same, I’d be horrified. You’re the one who knows how to concatenate all the clichés, buddy! That’s what we pay you for!

The thing is, there are enough procedural aesthetics in game design that you can distinguish between Good and Bad algorithmic level generation, or at least have non-stupid arguments about it. But it’s the opposite of Nintendo’s particular aesthetic, which is all about the hand-crafted and bespoke.

Fwiw, for me, I truly feel things were equally bleak from the mid 80s to the mid 90s but doomscrolling wasnt a thing then and direct action was much easier/safer because the level of surveillance was much lower so I feel like I was less mentally bogged down than I am now.

this is great—but it does remind me that Job was the first Bible story I (directly) learned, at a friend’s church sleepover, and it ruined me for the rest of the book when I found out it wasn’t all just God and Satan making crazy-ass bets with each other like the guys in Trading Places

If you make your voting system too much of a game, people are going to approach it as a game. As a game designer, I feel about our political system the way David Thomas feels about ice cream trucks.

The last NYC mayoral election may have had a terrible result, there was remarkably little bickering among my left-to-liberal friends about any of the offices...except AG, which didn't have ranked-choice voting and had Nixon and Teachout fighting over Bragg vs. Aboushi in the time-honored way.

Ppl are retweeting this and I just want to add that faxing is THE most annoying thing to do to your representatives. There are websites where you can fax for a small fee and those machines are LOUD and then at the very least they have to deal with all the print outs.

an interesting list to see would be all the classic games/puzzles that essentially started as toys: Populous, Choplifter, and Sim City are the first three examples to come to my mind since I teach a class on computer games of the 80s, but I’m sure there’s plenty of non-digital ones as well

@colewehrle.bsky.social wondering whether you agree with my take, specifically the idea that 1) kremlinology is sometimes a necessity when dealing with opaque entities of great power, and 2) a factional boardgame, by at least reading the entrails on a more meta- level, may be the most honest form.

I'm kidding about the specifics—I don't really know whether Pamela Paul correctly maps onto Umman Kudu or whatnot—but I do genuinely think that genre of Wehrle-esque complex asymmetric boardgame is the most effective and honest kind of of Kremlinology that understanding the NYT arguably requires.

I mean, back during the Bush admin when he was a more-or-less standard-issue California liberaltarian, sure…my assumption is that his current base is the same inertia-driven folks who keep Beetle Bailey and The Lockhorns running in whatever newspapers remain.

One of my strongest beliefs is that you could reskin the original Dune boardgame to be about the NYT and the factions would more or less all line up.
