Perot had two primary issues. Opposition to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), and the deficit. He didn't change the election but he definitely affected the Clinton presidency.

Jeff Greenfield was on this podcast and he said Perot drew equally from Bush and Bill Clinton, but to this day most people believe he cost Bush the election. I am not among them, I think Greenfield is right.

Perot got 19% of the vote. He didn't win any states, but he finished second in Maine and Utah. John Anderson, who ran in 1980, had gotten 6.6% of the national vote, no state wins.

The only real surprise about this election is that Trump is viable. In 2020, the primary goal was getting him out of office, and Democratic voters said, "Biden." Sure, Buttigieg and Sanders had some early momentum, but in the end, the Democratic electorate has rarely spoken louder.

We had real primaries. He won. His challengers never really made their case, and never drew a lot of votes. Biden won. Here we are. No one was in doubt about the risk.
