Women’s lives don’t matter to conservative ideologues. Only control of women’s bodies matters.

I have a holter monitor on my chest, blinking like I’m a Terminator. I just wrote poems at the kitchen table—one about my father’s last breaths, one about Pride penises. Love to my friends who I’ve leaned on to make grief bearable. Here’s a picture of me in an elevator wearing my dad’s suspenders.

You wrote: "Ours was written by Al, Gerry and myself…" and I was thinking what a tough break for Mr. Ewing at this juncture in history that it reads like, "Ours was written by A.I.…"

But isn’t it kind of thrilling when you meet someone at a party, and you just viscerally hate them. They’re theoretically part of your “community,” and as the conversation starts, you try to find a way into their their mindset, and you realize it’s just… wrong. Icky, bad. And I kind of love it.

It’s going to take me a long time to fully process “True Detective: Night Country.” This show was incredibly integrated thematically, with the writing, acting, design, music, editing all telling a complex and fascinating story. So much to dig through. 2nd watching coming up.

@dansavage.bsky.social On today’s “Lovecast,” you mentioned the term “cunt-struck” and gave its origin as the film “The Favourite.” I first heard it in Alan Bennett’s play and subsequent film, “The History Boys,” as spoken by the great Frances de La Tour to describe the derangement of the boys.

We somehow ended up watching the BluRay, and it had a bonus feature of almost 30 minutes of improvisation by the actors. That was the film they should have made. So funny. The actors were so natural and hilarious, and serving the stupid Hollywood plot actually hampered their brilliance.

We just saw “American Fiction,” and it had the strangest tone that just didn’t serve the material. The satire was the most interesting and pertinent thread, but it was played down like the director/writer was embarrassed by it. You know you're in trouble when they have an easy-listening jazz score.

Also, we know that controls imposed on sexuality are mostly enforced against women and queers. The cishet men who create the rules get a pass. For instance, put global anti-nudity rules on social media, and soon you only have naked male-gaze women on the site.

As conservatives rant against birth control and sex for pleasure, remember that the chances of getting pregnant from a single act of het unprotected sex is around 5%. Evolution hacked sex for our pleasure and deepening social ties. For humans, pregnancy is a sometimes byproduct, not the main point.

Spoilers for “All of Us Strangers”… I felt ripped off by the end of Andrew Haigh’s lovely movie, even though the clues that the relationship Harry wasn’t real were there. I’m not sure the point of Adam’s cathartic reckoning with his past if he doesn’t get to practice real, human love at the end.

We’re bailing on “For All Mankind,” Apple’s alternate history of the space program. After a season and a half, the show has become what my husband refers to as “just TV.” The writing is clunky, and there is no sense of vision or mission, just plot points and TV tropes.

Maybe it’s all this publisher/agent advice that books should be shorter than 100k words, 80k, 70k, but now every long book I read just cries out to me for cuts. I’m really enjoying Kim Stanely Robinson’s “New York 2140,” but I also want to go at it with my red marker machete.

@dansavage.bsky.social I’m not convinced by “tolyamorous”, your new word for “tolerant of polyamory.” Our ears expect “poly” to be up front in this word. So, “polytolerant” or for short, “polytoly,” works better IMO. “He’s polytoly, so I think their marriage can work despite his wife’s boyfriend.”

I don’t believe in New Year’s Resolutions, especially of the kind that begin with berating yourself. My only one is to submit more poetry to lit journals this year. I work hard on my poetry and perform it regularly. I need to fear rejection less and put my faith in the work. It deserves publication.

When people are listing Christmas movies, they should really include the late Jean-Marc Vallée’s wonderful 2005 “C.R.A.Z.Y.” The movie is bracketed by family Christmas Eves (which is also the protagonist’s birthday). Queer, spiritual, Quebec AF. Recommended.

For me, great comedy is not different from great drama. It’s about real humans going through real human problems, even if it’s ramped up into the extraordinarily silly. But this Coupling thing didn’t feel in any way real or illuminating.

It doesn’t work for capitalism. Capitalism requires existential fear of not working under even the most heinous of conditions for the most ridiculous sub-par wages. Can’t afford to let people lose the least millilitre of that constant anxiety.
