Planning out your story is important, but you have to always remain open to happy accidents and cosmic surprises. Create a map...but be unafraid to burn it. In the end, you know less about your story than your characters do: listen to them. Follow them wherever they lead.

This is why I laugh when I hear people complain about how a story felt like "it was made up as it went along". Friend, that's called 'writing'.
