It's really interesting thinking about this one and Good Morning, Vietnam in both being big audience hits that are also honest about the bleakness of war, and how the American war machine has to keep inventing the most palatable stories to keep it running.

Theory: you need someone as beloved and charismatic as Denzel or Robin Williams if you want audiences to go along with a movie that’s realistic about war like that.

Saw Good Morning Vietnam when it came out. I was 18 and the sum total of my understanding of the war was from movies and watching the last evacuation from Saigon on TV, because we still didn't learn about it in school. It wasn't until I took a 1960s history class in college that it was discussed.
