Point taken, however... Maybe they'd be a little more open if the UK simply joined Schengen and Euro and supported the EU? Given the rightward shift in european politics right now, I've no doubt the EU would be delighted to have a left leaning UK government on board.

That's an enormous 'simply' mate. The state of Britain at the minute, I'd be extremely surprised if the voters would go for joining the Euro. And even if they did a 'leftwing government' doesn't equate to a genuine shift amongst the populace or meaningful electoral reforms to prevent similar idiocy.
