Encores! at City Center did a production back in 2002 with Anne Hathaway (delightful, I must point out), Brian Stokes Mitchell, Douglas Sills, and Debbie Gravitte. It was great fun. The performers tended back then to hold scripts, and even the puppets held little scripts (which they consulted).
