As far as where I'd consider settling down, I'm not quite sure yet. I love the Santa Elena area, but it is a bit isolated, which my wife might not be crazy about after a while. A lot of expats live in the outskirts of San José, in cities like Grecia.

Costa Rica is stable. They have a functioning democracy, and don't even have an army - haven't had one for longer than I've been alive. Ecuador, not so much. They were fairly stable until a year or two ago, but now they are having some trouble. I hope they settle down soon.

I've thought about that as well. I lean to CR because one, I am technically a citizen, so it would eliminate some residency issues, and two, I like the climate and people. I can't say much about Panama, not having any firsthand knowledge. If it settles down some, Ecuador might be another option.

😆 I took that quite a while ago - years - as a quick shot with my computer to test it, then ended up using it on several platforms, as I had at least part of my face covered. (as an aside, I grow a beard in the winter, and tell my wife that anything that covers my face enhances my looks)

Birdwatching and rainforest (and cloud forest) are something we do every time, but we did the green sea turtles for the first time a couple of years ago in Tortuguero, which is a very interesting place. No highways to it, you get there by boat!
