She later reflected: “Each generation repeats its leaders. Each sees men endowed with superior inventiveness, energy, & genius for business, inspired by love of power & possession, launch selfish schemes… intent on persuading mankind that he had found the way, could lead men to the good life.”

The Economic Journal review stated: “[I]t is difficult to write about Miss Tarbell's remarkable achievement without using language approaching the edge of hyperbole. So careful is she in her facts, so sane in her judgements, that she seems to have reached the high-water mark of industrial history.”

Ida Tarbell: raised in Titusville, PA, the muckraking journalist took on one of the most powerful men in history, John D. Rockefeller. Her book The History of Standard Oil chronicled his shady business practices, which had crushed her hometown. #history #skystorians

The Smithsonian American Art Museum says that Lawrence "drew on the tales he heard in his community" & was "increasingly interested in producing images of historical figures like Brown because they were rarely included in standard history texts." #ushistory

As described by the Washington State Arts Commission, these use "vibrant colors, story-telling precision, and powerful graphic images" to "reveal the white, abolitionist’s dramatic moral choices and life events." Lawrence's paintings portray John Brown as both heroic & reckless. #johnbrown #civilwar

While Curry's Tragic Prelude is the best known of John Brown paintings, I've always really enjoyed the 22-print series "The Legend of John Brown" by Jacob Lawrence (1917-2000). Lawrence called his style "dynamic cubism." #history #skystorians #art #arthistory

A 1923 article in The Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette described the dance to the Snuggle Pup song as "an exotic dance breathing the rhythm of Pharaohs."

"A sensation everywhere," another Chicago newspaper ad for Snuggle Pups countered.

By 1925, their popularity had faded away. #history #skystorian

There was some pushback on these toys though, particularly with fears over boys playing with them. “PARENTS SEEK TO PROTECT SONS FROM ‘SNUGGLE-PUPPING’ AND THOSE ‘PETTING PARTIES,’” one headline read. #1920s #roaring20s

Advertisements for "Snuggle Pups" were common in newspapers between 1923-24. An article from 1922 in the New York Tribune called them “present-day teddy bears” that were the “latest fad with Chicago flappers.” Another newspaper claimed, "No flapper [is] complete without one." #history #skystorians

Both brothers enlisted during the Civil War. Alanson was killed at Chickamauga in 1863. Thaddeus was honorably discharged as lieutenant colonel of the 50th PA Militia Infantry that same year. He then practiced law. He was by his uncle’s bedside when he died in 1868. #lettersoflove #parenting
