I think the "POTUS orders the military to assassinate his political rival" example is probably too absurd for some. Try "POTUS orders the military to round up anyone who immigrated to this country in the last X years..." Ask your conservative friends/family if they're OK with that.

Or simply declares you an enemy of the state and imprisons or deports you. Or decides you are a terrorist and seizes all your assets and freezes your accounts. Or launches a full scale investigation into your life or business that requires you to spend millions producing documents and defending...
