A couple years ago, a kid jumped into the street in front of my car waving his hands. After I slammed on my brakes, he asked me to roll down my window and asked if I wanted to buy some lemonade from his stand. I didn't, but I told him that he should absolutely never run out in front of a car again.

X-Files and Buffy the Vampire Slayer had a weird combo of standalone episodes and episodes that pushed the mythology forward. But technically, radio and short film serials have been around for a long time and pre-date soap operas. They just kind of fell out of favor a long time ago.
