When Maher started his show, then called Politically Incorrect, in the 1990s, the premise was that Maher & other celebs who all know little about it commenting on politics. It's now basically the same show but the premise has gradually evolved into Maher being presented as some type of expert/guru.

Maher stopped being funny a long time ago. Now he just wants to be contrarian just for the sake of being a crank. It's long past time for HBO to cancel him.

The original premise works because Maher is a comedian who actually is pretty clueless about most things. And taken that way, his reactions can sometimes be funny. But the new premise makes no sense.

Pretty astounding that, after nearly 30 years hosting an expressly political show, the only thing that’s changed in that equation is that Maher is even less funny.

Not an expert, just a professional cynic, something that used to be more commonplace in traditional media before corporate consolidation.
