Growing up jewish in non-jewish areas has inured me to the reality that you're never *quite* safe, even amongst mostly friendly & mostly simpatico folks, and that all alliances are qualified alliances. That said, qualified alliances are still things to not take for granted or abandon.

In short, people can only disappoint you when you fully expect them to be or act differently. Once they don't, continued disappointment (or despair) is on the person feeling that; they told or showed you once.
