Read THE ANNOTATED STAR WARS to see how very much, since the beginning, Lucas was a "raw idea" man that NEEDED lots of people to smooth out or re-direct; he would then run with that. There was never a "grand vision." That was a myth he let Campbell create,then deluded himself into buying into.

True but my sense was that the "grand vision" idea was partly cherished & imposed by the fans themselves. I remember someone telling me during the lead-up to the first prequel that GL had "sketched out the whole grand story on the back of an envelope" like Lincoln writing the Gettysburg Address, lol
