Very cool! Lotta books in there. I’m seeing more and more Carrd sites now for authors. Did you like working with that tool? Was it complicated?

If it’s novel information and sequential “lines of thinking” than it’s totally reasonable, as CJ Cherryh has proven, but it becomes an issue when it’s essentially restating the same intent or conclusion over and over using different language, as I sometimes see with critique partners. 🧐

Actually, the habit of concise interiority (and dialogue for that matter, though it rarely comes up as a note) probably came from my background writing screenplays where virtually no naval gazing is entertained. Indeed, the 360 page book I’m writing now started as a 120 page screenplay…

A consistent note I get is to add more interiority, like readers are actively curious what else the MC is thinking.
I thought my characters were navel gazing until I read CJ Cherryh, who regularly has an entire page of thoughts separating two consecutive lines of dialogue.

I firmly believe no one is capable on their own of creating a cohesive story. It’s through collaboration and feedback that we find the way through, whether you’re a pantser or planner

It’s a good point! The output is always more creative for me if I let it simmer a little. And as a completionist to a fault I have little to be concerned about

Actually I think it might be because I finally cinched my act ii woes that were both a legitimate challenge and a key focus of the rewrite. The character outlines are looking good, I know what can be pulled from the old draft and what needs to be rewritten, just a matter of putting them to paper. 📝

Love the feeling of absolute despair as I realize a new and terrible way to ruin everything for my character, even as I’m not sure how he’ll solve it, it’s too good to pass up! To brutal, rather.

4) tension and stakes It was easier before to cut away after a character accomplished some task, in search of drama elsewhere, but with one character at a time, every scene needs a series of trials. No action can exist without the formula ‘she tries X, but Y complicates it, so instead she does Z’ 🚀~

3) perspective & voice Before I had 7 POVs out of misplaced convenience. By forcing myself into 4 high-quality POVs, each carrying an entire ~3000 word chapter at a time, I’ve been pushed to develop the unique voice to convey the world, burying some details while gaining considerable interiority 🧠 ~

2) themes Building each character’s thoughts and reactions to major plot points has helped me tie their motivations more closely to the theme. I thought I had strong themes before, but now each character is expressing competing positions in each situation, which helps explore the ideas themselves 💡

1) amazing for pacing/tension earlier drafts suffered from exposition chapters, characters swept up with the plot but without specific goals, and characters twiddling their thumbs until the plot needed them. Seeing each story by itself forces me to contend with their goals and actions more directly~

Working through my comprehensive rewrite, I found Brandon Sanderson’s advice like a life preserver 🛟 to a drowning man.

He said, outline and draft each POV character’s arc as its own story, then figure out how to interweave them. 📖

Yeah I think overall in the series (whether or not Wells intended it) the struggle and arc of dramatic tension centers around Murderbot’s emotional trauma and self isolation in its relationships, while the action is more a backdrop, a foregone conclusion. You’ll see that even more in the next book.

Good review! Overall I agree with the hand waving somewhat, though I feel like Wells appropriately establishes all the actions murderbot is capable of beforehand, so there’s no convenient dues ex machina to end it, just hyper-prescient self aware multitasking

Although it closely follows the events of the first season of the show, I loved some of the choices and insight into the mindscapes of our characters. Really adds a lot. A blindingly fast read and relatively simple language, even at 700 pages making it both riveting and smooth.

# 4 in the foreigner series and #1 in the 2nd trilogy. They are FINALLY on the spaceship and for how sci-fi fantasy this has been, Cherryh is great at working in hard science and having them impact the plot. The first writer who described station conditions realistically 💙📚🔱
