It’s not worth arguing about though. Republicans like one word because it’s part of their party’s name unlike the other one. That’s really what it’s all about. If the parties hadn’t realigned you’d be hearing about how we’re only a democracy.

No, (some) Republicans make the distinction because they're against democracy and they're looking for some way to say that without seemingly abandoning a US pro-democracy consensus (by mining 18th century usage).
