I'm not familiar with the AP social sciences rubrics (and only took AP Calc and Bio in high school, two decades ago); is it something about the prompt and response structure that makes for bad writing?

Students aren't really expected to write proper essays (unless teachers require that they do)--the current rubrics serve as checklists for points. Whatever writing they do for the exam is nothing like a term paper requiring research and revision.
