I remember the runup to the 2002 French presidential election. I'd arrived in the country the year before and was living in a small village in the south. After reading yet another article describing popular discontent with a country in decline, I expressed my incomprehension to my then-wife. 🧵

I don't get it, I said. There's plenty of work, the roads are well-maintained, the TGV runs on time, life is pretty good. So why is everyone so dissatisfied? She laughed and said, Don't worry, you'll understand eventually. That's just how France is.
