Orphaned wells are a climate and public health nightmare. The oil industry continues to dump *billions* in cleanup costs onto taxpayers and is fighting reform efforts.
Fantastic reporting by Mark Olalde for @propublica.bsky.social on an issue that rarely gets the attention it deserves:

In 2022, I spoke w/ Navahine, the lead plaintiff, about the lawsuit for @gristnews.bsky.social.
"Though it feels a bit overwhelming, she said, 'I do know that it’s the right thing to do. And I really hope that it makes an impact.'"
It's safe to say she and her peers have made an impact.

From The Guardian: "Hawaii officials have announced a 'groundbreaking' legal settlement with a group of young climate activists, which they said will force the state’s department of transportation to move more aggressively towards a zero-emission transportation system."

We often say that CO₂ emissions from shipping are hard-to-abate but 40% by weight of what we ship is fossil fuels so it should get easier when we decarbonize.
