No idea why it's the case here, but the majority of houses built prior to 1980 or so have no basements or second floors.

Second floors, I get—too hard to cool. But the lack of basement is interesting. My old row home in Baltimore, like many, had the kitchen in the basement to keep the heat further away from the living space. I always thought that was clever thinking for when it was constructed.
