I keep trying to read Lovecraft because "nono, you have to read the GOOD ones..." and they're still all racist as hell! I suspect they're good in many ways in ways I can't appreciate because I'm still reeling from whatever nonsense he came up with this time.
I've found it far more fulfilling to listen to and watch other people's interpretations of his work. The BBC Lovecraft Investigations are amazing if you're into fictional story-as-podcast, for example.
He's impossible to directly read in an uncritical manner, you're absolutely right.
I don't care if people read him. I care that they say they do and then say "the stories aren't racist just because he was".
I'm starting to suspect that a lot of people who don't say they do in order to sound edgy.
