Absolutely. If you can enjoy the ideas in spite of all else that is present then hey it's your free time. Go wild. It's the assertion that racist ideas were not detectable in the stories that make me bust out the side-eye. And to be honest I'm starting to wonder why people ALWAYS mention him.

Unfortunately he is considered incredibly significant. Not just because of his influence on other authors but also as the reason any horror in the US was published at all for a long time. I don't think anyone HAS to read him unless they want to see what those influences on other authors look like.

Plus, he was considered extreme even by the standards of his era, so the typical handwavey cop-out of "oh he was just a product of his time" doesn't work.
