This kind of thing reminds me, adjacently, of that evergreen question "what book do you wish you had written" which to me is such a weird question because the whole point is that I want to write MY books and to read the books I can't have written by the writers who wrote them,

exactly! Like the book I wish i had written is the one I'm writing, I read books because I want to be lost in worlds I didn't come up with.

It is a good thing I am not on panels because I would have interpreted that as "What idea did you have that just didn't work out in book form" and not "What other author's book do you envy?"

Have you always felt that way? I was writing pretty regularly but got bogged down by imposter syndrome, and the thought - why keep writing if I will never be able to write as well as my favorite authors?
