I think it's a size of state thing. Currently in NY; they seem to think of themselves as New Yorkers. But I think of myself as a New Englander, not just a Masshole. If I had ended up in Portland or Burlington, as I always expected, I would not consider myself to have made a cultural change.

This is exactly it. Moving from Worcester to Providence was the same level of cultural emigration as moving to Springfield or Burlington or Boston. The lines between metros (or NECTAs I guess) feel more real than the state lines within New England. But moving to Syracuse or NYC would be "leaving"
