Roper Center data archivist. Posting mostly about old polling and sometimes new politics. Also like reading about food, art, and quirky history. Oh, and I make collages.

The fragrance is lovely; it’s tough as nails. I had several old roses in my last house and couldn’t take them to my current small city yard. I was saddest about that one, which had settled in nicely. Also I liked the apothecary’s rose, but so did the Japanese beetles

The first concern of any action we take at this point in history is, "Does this help Trump and thus fascism?" Not "How can I feel better right now?" or "How can I reshape politics with my fantasy?" or "This is how I show everyone it's their fault, not mine." Anything else serves Trump.

Look for the ones with the red chart symbol - a few are still in process for question entry, and some just have too many conditions to be practical to present in that way

Jackson, spitting fire: "Snyder’s absurd and atextual reading of the statute is one only today’s Court could love." Of federalism concerns: "[W]oulds, coulds, and shoulds of this nature must be addressed across the street with Congress, not in the pages of the U. S. Reports."

iPoll has hundreds of TESS experiments entered with results by experimental group, question by question, with summaries of the design to walk the user through each experiment. Might be worth looking at.

Interesting free-response comments from American Soldier surveys of Black GIs in WWII (part of @edgitre.bsky.social 's fantastic mass transcription project) about the surveys themselves. Attitudes range from deep distrust to support.

I think it's a size of state thing. Currently in NY; they seem to think of themselves as New Yorkers. But I think of myself as a New Englander, not just a Masshole. If I had ended up in Portland or Burlington, as I always expected, I would not consider myself to have made a cultural change.

I sent this email to Snopes about their ridiculous Charlottesville "fact check" on Friday, followed up yesterday, no response. So sharing it here as an open letter. Apologies for the typos, I wrote it pretty fast. @brooklynmarie.bsky.social

I have two aims here - I am trying to fill in some gaps in knowledge about some poorly documented, but important, survey series. But I'm also looking to get oral history from the people who built the industry on the ground. Their work deserves greater recognition.

Looking for help: I'm interested in talking to interviewers or field directors for public opinion surveys in the 50s, 60s or 70s, particular people of color. I would be especially interested to talk to anyone who was involved on any level with the Data Black or GE Trendex surveys.

Some reduce the 2024 campaign to a contest between two old men, but it's a choice of two slates of federal appointees who'll impact your life in a million ways. Biden has staffed executive agencies with excellent choices who are doing good work. Trump will empower an army of Stephen Millers.

The coordinated attacks on misinformation researchers and academics who research power and propaganda are accelerating. It’s increasingly seen as dangerous to try and understand the reality of the systems being built around us and to remove our ability to know what truth is.

From a 1942 Bureau of Intelligence survey by NORC (then in Denver) about sources of war information. Half an hour of radio news consumption a week was considered "high" during a world war. I get that much news about stupid Trump every day before noon.

I’m sure that in many cases consultants recommend things like hiring more faculty and librarians; increasing funding for the humanities and social sciences; starting new arts programs; and saving money by cancelling plans to build new stadium and cutting salaries for upper admin, right? Right?!?!

When admins bring in consultants from these types of firms, they've already decided to cut programs and simply need someone to put a "data-driven" veneer on it. Before hiring a consultancy, admin should be required to publicize the firm's other higher ed clients and the outcomes *they* experienced
